A. Advanced Confidentiality What it means : This level implies very high protection , possibly for classified or national security-related information. Why it’s incorrect : CUI does not require this extreme level of protection. Advanced confidentiality is more applicable to Top Secret or Special Access Program information, which is regulated under stricter federal controls (e.g., under NISPOM, not NIST 800-171). B. Basic Confidentiality What it means : This level suggests minimal security measures , enough to protect data from casual or low-skill threats. Why it’s incorrect : CUI demands more than basic security. It’s sensitive enough that a breach could cause a significant impact , so stronger controls (like encryption, access logging, and multi-factor authentication) are needed. Basic confidentiality falls short of the NIST SP 800-171 standards. C. Moderate Confidentiality (Correct Answer) What it means : Protection against serious threats , ensuring that loss of data confidentiality would have a serious adverse effect on operations or individuals. Why it’s correct : This level is explicitly required by FIPS 199 and NIST SP 800-171 for systems storing or transmitting CUI. It balances strong security controls with practicality. D. Enhanced Confidentiality What it means : Not a standard category defined in federal guidelines. It suggests more than “moderate” but not necessarily “high.” Why it’s incorrect : Since "Enhanced confidentiality" isn’t a formal designation under FIPS 199 or NIST 800-171, it's ambiguous and not the recognized requirement for CUI. Using undefined terms can lead to implementation confusion.
