Step 1: Define Variables Let: 𝑅 R = Number of regular-time hours worked per quarter 𝑂 O = Number of overtime hours worked per quarter 𝑆 S = Number of gallons of paint subcontracted per quarter Step 2: Define Objective Function Minimize the total cost: Cost = 12.50 𝑅 + 18.75 𝑂 + 7 𝑆 Cost = 12.50 R + 18.75 O + 7 S where 18.75 18.75 is the cost of overtime (1.5 times the regular cost). Step 3: Define Constraints Employee capacity: 𝑅 + 𝑂 ≤ 370 × 7 × 5 × 4 R + O ≤ 370 × 7 × 5 × 4 𝑅 + 𝑂 ≤ 51800  hours R + O ≤ 51800  hours Overtime constraint: 𝑂 ≤ 3 × 370 × 5 × 4 O ≤ 3 × 370 × 5 × 4 𝑂 ≤ 22200  hours O ≤ 22200  hours Subcontracting limit: 𝑆 ≤ 100000  gallons S ≤ 100000  gallons Non-negativity: 𝑅 , 𝑂 , 𝑆 ≥ 0 R , O , S ≥ 0 Step 4: Set Up the Excel Spreadsheet Open a new Excel workbook. Enter the coefficients of the objective function and constraints. Set up cells for 𝑅 R , 𝑂 O , and 𝑆 S . Create a formula for the objective function. Set up formulas for each constraint. Step 5: Use Solver to Find the Optimal Solution Go to Data>Solver Set the objective to the cell with the cost formula. Set the decision variables to the cells for 𝑅 R , 𝑂 O , and 𝑆 S . Add the constraints based on the limits defined above. Choose Simplex px as the solving method. Click Solve. I'll provide an example setup and the Solver configuration in Excel. Example Setup in Excel Cell A1: "Regular Hours" Cell B1: 12.50 Cell A2: "Overtime Hours" Cell B2: 18.75 Cell A3: "Subcontracted Gallons" Cell B3: 7 Cell C1: 𝑅 R (empty cell for decision variable) Cell C2: 𝑂 O (empty cell for decision variable) Cell C3: 𝑆 S (empty cell for decision variable) Cell D1: = 𝐶 1 ∗ 𝐵 1 + 𝐶 2 ∗ 𝐵 2 + 𝐶 3 ∗ 𝐵 3 = C 1 ∗ B 1 + C 2 ∗ B 2 + C 3 ∗ B 3 (objective function formula) Cell E1: "Regular + Overtime <= 51800" Cell F1: = 𝐶 1 + 𝐶 2 = C 1 + C 2 Cell G1: 51800 Cell E2: "Overtime <= 22200" Cell F2: = 𝐶 2 = C 2 Cell G2: 22200 Cell E3: "Subcontract <= 100000" Cell F3: = 𝐶 3 = C 3 Cell G3: 100000 Now, I'll solve this in Excel and provide screenshots of the setup and Solver configuration. Excel Solver Screenshot and Formulas Solver Configuration: Set Objective: D1 By Changing Variable Cells: C1:C3 Add Constraints: C1 + C2 <= 51800 C2 <= 22200 C3 <= 100000
