CBSE 2026-27 Academic Calendar: Key Dates, Two-Board Exam and New Curriculum

CBSE has published the academic calendar for the 2026-27 session. The release highlights the new two-board exam policy for Class 10, a revised curriculum for Classes IX–XII, and a detailed schedule of school openings, vacations, periodic tests and holidays.

Key Points

  • Two-board exam system for Class 10: mandatory first exam, optional second for improvement.
  • New curriculum for Classes IX–XII focuses on competency-based, application-oriented learning.
  • School reopening dates: June 22 (Classes X & XII) and July 1 (remaining classes).
  • Major holidays: Dussehra (Oct 19-20), Diwali (Nov 8-11), Christmas (Dec 25).
  • Periodic tests and pre-board exams spread from July 2026 to February 2027.

Details

CBSE’s two-board exam policy means Class 10 students must sit the first board exam and may choose to sit a second exam to improve their marks. The higher score of the two attempts will be recorded in the final marksheet. Internal assessment marks are carried forward and generally not repeated.

The 2026-27 curriculum for Classes IX–XII introduces competency-based learning, experiential projects, skill development and flexible subject choices. The three-language policy will also start for Classes IX and X, with students studying three languages but only two Indian languages required.

School opening and vacation dates: the session starts on April 1, 2026. Classes X & XII begin on April 2, 2026; other classes on April 4. Summer vacation runs from May 16 to June 30, 2026. Classes X & XII reopen on June 22, 2026, and other classes on July 1.

Periodic tests: First periodic test in the first week of August 2026, second in the second week of September 2026, half-yearly exam on October 19-20, 2026. Pre-board exams are scheduled for the first week of December 2026 and the second week of January 2027. The annual examination is set for March 28, 2027, with report cards distributed thereafter.

What It Means for Students

Students should prepare for the first Class 10 board exam by early 2027 and can plan a second attempt if needed. The new curriculum requires more project work and practical assessments, so students should start early on assignments and internal assessments. Key dates to remember: school reopening on June 22/July 1, half-yearly exam on Oct 19-20, first pre-board in December, and annual exam on March 28, 2027. Keep track of these dates on the official CBSE website for any updates.
